A SEASON FOR MAKERS: ARTISTS SUNDAY ILLUMINATES LOCAL CREATIVITY
On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the Laramie Plains Civic Center (LPCC) will once again transform into one of the region’s largest handmade marketplaces as more than seventy Wyoming artists set up shop for the fourth annual Artists Sunday Market. What began as a small but enthusiastic experiment in local holiday shopping has quickly grown into a signature event that celebrates creativity, fuels the local economy, and reflects the Civic Center’s expanding role as a hub for arts and community life.
Artists Sunday is part of a nationwide movement that spotlights artists as essential drivers of both culture and commerce. Hundreds of communities across the country participate each year, encouraging residents to shift at least part of their holiday spending toward locally made, one-of-a-kind work. In Laramie, this movement has found fertile ground within the historic halls of the Civic Center, where painters, ceramicists, jewelers, textile artists, photographers, and makers of all kinds will offer shoppers unique holiday gifts.
This year’s market held Sunday, November 30, once again aligns with Laramie Main Street Alliance’s Small Business Saturday, tying the event into a full weekend of “shop local” celebrations across Laramie.
“This season is a crucial time to support the small businesses and creative entrepreneurs who give Laramie its character,” said Jessica Brauer, Executive Director of the LPCC. “Partnering with Downtown Laramie reinforces the message that buying locally, whether from a storefront or an artist’s booth, keeps our community strong.”
Nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Artists Sunday Market offers an alternative to big-box and online marketplaces. Visitors can browse a wide range of handmade goods, meet the people who made them, and experience the joy of a truly local shopping tradition.
“Every year our community shows up for its artists, and every year the market grows,” Brauer said. “It’s a reminder of how central creativity is to who we are as a town.”
Beyond the market itself, the event reflects the LPCC’s broader mission. As one of Wyoming’s largest nonprofit community centers, the Civic Center supports over 95 tenant organizations and hundreds of artists, makers, and creative entrepreneurs each year. Events like Artists Sunday embody the organization’s commitment to strengthening the creative economy, expanding access to the arts, and ensuring that Laramie remains a place where artists can live, work, and thrive.
The Artists Sunday Market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the LPCC’s North and South Gyms, with entrances on both Garfield and Custer Streets.
The Laramie Plains Civic Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community connections, nurturing creativity, and supporting an enriched future.
